How to write better AI prompts

Most weak AI answers come from missing details, not a weak AI. These six fixes cover most of them.

1. Say who you are and why you need it

An AI can't see your situation. One line about it changes the whole answer.

BeforeGive me a workout plan
AfterI am a beginner with two free evenings a week and no gym. Give me a simple home workout plan.

2. Say what form the answer should take

Ask for a table, a numbered list, three bullets or a word limit. Otherwise you get whatever the AI picks.

BeforeCompare these laptops
AfterCompare these three laptops in a table with price, battery life and weight, then pick one for a student.

3. Name the audience and tone

Good writing depends on who is reading it. This matters most for emails and posts.

BeforeWrite an email to my boss
AfterWrite a short, friendly email to my manager asking to move Friday's meeting to Monday.

4. Add your limits

Say what must be included, what to avoid, and your budget or deadline.

BeforePlan a trip to Japan
AfterPlan a 7-day trip to Japan in April for two people, under $3,000, without renting a car.

5. For code, show the problem

Give the language, the code, what happens, and what you expected.

BeforeMy code has a bug, fix it
AfterThis Python function returns None when the list is empty. I expected 0. Here is the code: ...

6. For research, ask for sources and dates

Set a time period and ask where the claims come from, then check those sources yourself. AI can get them wrong.

BeforeIs remote work good for productivity?
AfterWhat do studies since 2020 say about remote work and productivity? Cite each source and say how reliable it is.

Then ask a better follow-up

The first answer is a starting point. Try "What is the strongest argument against your answer?" or "What important thing have I not asked about yet?"
